Regenerative Medicine Q & A

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine is a collection of treatments that use human cells to boost your body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Dr. Nelson uses cells taken from your body to provide safe, effective therapies for many musculoskeletal conditions. The two main types of regenerative medicine are stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.

What is stem cell therapy?

Stem cell therapy uses your body’s ability to heal itself to repair damaged tissue that’s been unable to heal on its own. Dr. Nelson initiates new, healthy tissue growth by injecting regenerative stem cells into painful tissues, including:

  • Cartilage
  • Bone
  • Muscle
  • Tendons
  • Ligaments
  • Vertebral disc cartilage

Stem cells can alter themselves into other types of cells that help reduce inflammation and boost regeneration. The stem cells do this by signaling to your existing cells that they need to produce new tissues.

Using ultrasound or fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance, Dr. Nelson takes bone marrow from the back of your hip. This bone marrow is a rich source of stem cells. The bone marrow goes into a centrifuge that separates the stem cells and other useful cells.

The result is called bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC). Dr. Nelson injects the BMAC back into your painful tissues, again using image guidance technology.

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

Platelet-rich plasma injections are similar to stem cell therapy in many ways. Rather than stem cells, PRP uses platelets from your blood, which contain high levels of growth factors. These growth factors help wounds and tissue damage to heal. When you receive a concentrated dose of PRP, the growth factors supercharge your natural healing abilities.

Dr. Nelson takes a sample of your blood and spins it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma and platelets. He then injects a concentrated solution into your damaged tissues.

PRP injections can help to reduce swelling and pain, rebuild cartilage, and repair torn ligaments. The PRP accelerates and boosts healing, giving you faster and better results.

Where can I get regenerative medicine treatment?

Regenerative medicine is a rapidly expanding field of medicine that has great potential. However, it’s important to choose a provider who specializes in pain and regenerative medicine for your treatment. There are many providers offering stem cell therapy that are not as qualified or have the expertise as Dr. Nelson.

Dr. Nelson and his team are exceptionally well-trained in regenerative medicine techniques and only recommend this form of therapy if they feel it could be of genuine benefit. Dr. Nelson takes a holistic approach to patient care and evaluates what’s best for your health and well-being as a whole, rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.

If you visit Dr. Nelson for your treatment, you can be sure that you’ll receive care from highly skilled specialists in interventional pain procedures. Dr. Nelson is one of the most skilled pain physicians in the area and has performed tens of thousands of procedures over the years.
